The New Yorker Fiction Series

During my time at The New Yorker as Design Director we adopted a unique approach to the magazine's revered fiction series. We treated each piece as a novel and created a book jacket concept as the primary art. Working with our talented team and some of my favorite authors on these was was truly the creative experience of a lifetime. The process was extremely fun and inspiring. After reading the pieces several times, we brainstormed as a group to hone the concepts and then worked with some brilliant contributors to execute the art. In many cases these were created completely in-house. Occasionally the authors would drop by to review the art, which was thrilling for the team. Especially when Tom Hanks showed up unannounced and enthusiastically signed off on his first ever New Yorker piece. This is a selection of my favorites, two of which were Society of Publication Design award winners.
